On January 14, 2021 at least 9 people were injured after a bus driver drove off of a bridge in the Bronx, NY. Officials say the MTA bus driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when the bus careened off the bridge overpass. The bus driver suffered bruises, cuts, body pains, and a broken jaw.
The bus crashed through the barriers and was seen hanging off the overpass onto the roadway below. Several people were aboard the bus and were thrown to the front of the bus on impact. The bus driver was attempting to make a turn, but lost control and drove off the bridge. Several large cranes were sent to the scene to lift the bus off the road.
MTA Chief Safety Officer Pat Warren says:
“We know the speed limit on the road is 25 mph, but the appropriate speed for taking a turn such as this is between 3 and 4 miles per hour. So we can say at this time while the investigation is ongoing, speed is clearly a factor and is obviously of great concern to us.”
The bus fell approximately 50 feet onto the access road below. The bus was a compressed natural gas bus and was articulated. The bus was last inspected on January 13, 2021 and had no mechanical issues.
