The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit has worked with the District Attorney’s Office to dismiss charges against Tomka McDowell for the April 2019 murder of Santa Acevedo in Charlotte, NC.
Mrs. Acevedo and her husband were both shot on Newland Road. The wife died from the shooting. The husband was taken to Atrium Health for treatment. It appears that the shooting occurred in a house.
Mr. McDowell was initially identified as a suspect via witness testimony in the murder of Mrs. Acevedo, but information provided by McDowell’s attorney assisted the Homicide Unit’s continued investigation into the case and revealed Mr. McDowell could not have been involved in the murder.
Video evidence proved that Mr. McDowell was at work at the time of the murder. Mr. McDowell’s defense attorney was able to obtain the video surveillance footage that proved his innocence. If it were not for the video footage, Mr. McDowell would of still been sitting in jail for a murder he didn’t commit.
Upon this discovery, Homicide Unit detectives and the District Attorney’s office agreed that all charges related to Mr. McDowell should be dismissed. Mr. McDowell has since been released from jail.
