EMPLOYEE IDENTIFIED THAT DIED IN STEAK N’ SHAKE ROBBERY, TWO EMPLOYEES SHOT

Darnell Harris was shot and killed today at his Charlotte, NC Steak N’ Shake job during a robbery. One of his co-workers was shot too, but survived. The suspect was shot by a responding officer.

On July 9, 2019, the communication centers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the Pineville Police Department began receiving multiple calls in reference to an armed robbery at the Steak ‘n Shake restaurant located at 9700 South Boulevard.

Officers with both jurisdictions responded to the scene. Officers with the Pineville Police Department arrived first and encountered an armed suspect inside the business. During the encounter, at least one Pineville Police Department officer perceived an imminent, lethal threat and shot the suspect.

Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department arrived shortly thereafter and began working to secure the scene and attend to the wounded.

Darnell Harris, an employee of the restaurant, sustained a gunshot wound from the suspect during the robbery. Darnell was pronounced deceased on scene by medics.

A second victim, also a Steak N’ Shake employee was shot and transported to Atrium Health’s Carolina’s Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
