A state trooper with North Carolina State Highway Patrol injured in a motorcycle crash in Charlotte, NC on the morning of July 22, 2019 has been paralyzed from the neck down.
Trooper Christopher L. Wooten, a 14-year highway patrol veteran, was involved in a collision. Wooten was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Dontay Kilgo, 36, is charged in connection with the crash, as he allegedly ran away from a traffic stop initiated by Trooper Wooten.
Days later on Friday afternoon, it was revealed that Wooten had suffered significant spinal cord trauma during the crash.
Surgeons are classifying Wooten’s injury as a complete spinal cord injury at the top of the spine, which is resulting in paralysis from the neck down.
Wooten was trying to stop a vehicle allegedly driven by Dontay, but the trooper instead collided with a second vehicle. The first vehicle that Wooten was trying to pull over kept going and did not remain at the scene.
The alleged driver of the vehicle who left the scene is Dontay Kilgo, he was caught days later. Dontay was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer, felony flee to elude, reckless driving, failure to heed to blue lights, driving while license revoked, and possession of marijuana.
