A 17-year old inmate died inside the jail on November 21, 2020. The inmate identified as Desmond W. was housed at the Mecklenburg County Juvenile Detention Center on 5235 Spector Drive Charlotte, NC.
The juvenile was found unresponsive in his cell in the afternoon. CPR was performed by facility medical staff and first responders, the juvenile inmate was pronounced deceased a little later at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center.
Desmond was from Rockingham County and had been in custody at the Mecklenburg County Juvenile Detention Center since November 20, 2020. There were no signs of foul play and all preliminary reports indicate an apparent suicide, officials say. The State Bureau of Investigation will conduct an investigation.
Desmond was committed through the juvenile justice system to the custody of the Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice.
The Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice is cooperating with the investigation.
