A 6-year-old boy shot his Virginia elementary school teacher Abigail Zwerner at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, VA. The video was released in October 2026.
The shooting was on Jan. 6, 2023. The kid stole a gun from his mom’s purse identified as Deja Taylor. The kid had behavior problems and was on a modified class schedule where he was released from school at 2 p.m., way earlier than the other kids. Follow Charlotte Alerts on Instagram.
The kid went to his first grade class and started an argument with his teacher Abigail. The kid threatened that he had a gun but no one believed him. As a precaution Abigail notified an assistant principal about the matter, but nothing was done about the threat.
Within the same hour the kid shot his teacher Abigail in the chest and hand. Abigail fell out and started bleeding as over 14 first graders watched in horror.
Another teacher came to restrain the kid suspect, as the other kids were rushed out of the room into a safe classroom. The school was placed on lock down.
Police were called and the un shot teacher is seen hugging the student gently to stop him from getting away. The kid is seen on video calling his teacher a bitch and cursing at her. The kid even threatens to fight the police and says he is not scared to go to jail.
The kid also admits on video that he stole the gun from his mom Deja’s purse. Police then detain the bad kid. Click here to see more school shootings.
Abigail was seen on video on the ground being attended to by medics. Abigail spent nearly two weeks in the hospital, required six surgeries, and does not have the full use of her left hand. The bullet narrowly missed her heart and remains in her chest.
The child’s mom Deja was arrested charged with eight counts of child neglect. The child suspect was not arrested for the shooting but he was ordered to spend 227 days undergoing inpatient psychiatric confinement.
Abigail later sued the New Port News School system and the Richneck Elementary School along with the assistant principal, claiming that the principal was warned about the kid having a gun, but no action was taken.
Abigail testified at the trial that she thought she was dying after she was shot. A jury awarded Abigail $10 million in damages, plus interest, The jury said that the shooting could have been avoided and that the school exhibited gross negligence.
