Kuwait is allies with the United States, the shooting down of the jets was a mistake by Kuwait. Leaders in Kuwait say they thought the U.S.A. jets were drones or missiles from Iran.
2 pilots were in each of the 3 jets. Kuwait surface to air missiles targeted the F-15 E Strike Eagles and fired at them. The pilots were not expecting any military fire on them within friendly allied territory and they did not have time to react or use evasive action to out fly the missiles.
The missiles hit all 3 jets and the aircrafts loss control and all went in a downward spiral. All 6 pilots ejected from the jets and parachuted to the ground in different areas of Kuwait.
Once on the ground, one pilot was met by angry arabs that tried to fight the pilot. The pilot had to tell them to stop and that he was an American.
Another American pilot crash landed in a different location of Kuwait where arabs were accommodating and helped the pilot. All pilots were then picked up by emergency recuse American military personnel.
