MAN CHARGED IN DEATH OF PASSENGER IN WRECK THAT KILLED A MAN & EJECTED 4 PEOPLE

Date:

Xavier Byrd, 22, is accused of being intoxicated during a wreck while he was driving a 2019 Audi Q5. The wreck killed 21-year-old Christian Lanier and sent several other people to the hospital.

Xavier is charged with Felony Death by Motor Vehicle, Involuntary Manslaughter, two counts of Felony Serious Injury by Motor Vehicle, Driving While Impaired, and Reckless Driving.

On Sunday, July 14, 2019 at 2:41 a.m., a single vehicle crash occurred at 1880 Brookshire Boulevard Charlotte, NC.

A 2019 Audi Q5 was being driven at a high rate of speed by Xavier on Brookshire Boulevard when it left the roadway to the left, entered the grass median and flipped. The Audi was occupied by a driver and 3 passengers, none of which were wearing seat belts.

All occupants were ejected from the vehicle on impact. Christian was pronounced deceased on scene by medics. The car caught fire. The remaining occupants were transported to Atrium Health’s Carolina’s Medical Center, two of which were in critical condition.

The investigation revealed that Xavier was operating the vehicle while impaired on alcohol and that he was driving at a high rate of speed when the crash occurred. Xavier turned himself in at police headquarters on August 29, officers say.
