LATINO MAN CONVICTED IN THE SHOOTING DEATH OF BLACK MAN

In October 2019 a jury convicted George Fernandez, 29, for the 2017 shooting death of 23-year-old Jamario McNeely in Charlotte, NC. Moments after Jamario was killed, Mr. Fernandez remained on scene and agreed to speak with Homicide Detectives at police headquarters.

Mr. Fernandez was originally charged with murder, but a jury convicted him of voluntary manslaughter. Mr. Fernandez was sentenced to 64-89 months in prison.

In August 2017 Jamario was shot to death on Pleasant Dale Drive by Mr. Fernandez. The two were involved in an ongoing argument. During the course of this argument Mr. Fernandez pulled out a shotgun and fired four times, fatally striking Jamario.

Mr. Fernandez claimed he acted in self-defense.
