POLICE SUV AND VEHICLE CRASH HEAD ON INTO EACH OTHER

Officer Lindsey Stapleton with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department was badly hurt in a head to head crash on July 21, 2020. Rayford Robinson, 34, was charged in the crash.

The collision was on Toddville Road Charlotte, NC at 3 a.m.

Officer Stapleton was travelling on Toddville Road when the driver of the Hyundai, identified as Rayford was travelling on the same road. Rayford allegedly crossed the center line with his vehicle and entered the northbound lane of travel. Officer Stapleton was unable to avoid a collision and was struck head-on by the Hyundai. 

At the time of the collision Officer Stapleton was on-duty patrolling the area and was not using her emergency equipment. Rayford was evaluated, and impairment is suspected to be a contributing factor for the crash. Reckless and wrong-way driving are additional suspected factors to this crash. Officer Stapleton was sent to the hospital with serious injuries along with Rayford and a second passenger in his vehicle. 

Rayford is in the hospital now but upon his release will be charged with driving while impaired and two counts of felony serious injury by vehicle.
