A family is in disbelief as 3 family members died within a month of each other. Aneesah Akbar, 47, and her mother Darlene Akbar, 74, were killed in a DWI car crash on October 15, 2024 in Charlotte, NC. Aneesah’s father and Darlene’s husband identified as Khalil Akbar, 77, died in Charlotte on September 6, 2024. They all come from a deeply rooted muslim family.
Aneesah and Darlene were driving a Toyota on W.T. Harris Boulevard at 2 p.m. De’Ontrey Taylor, 25, was driving a Hyundai vehicle. Follow Charlotte Alerts on Instagram.
De’Ontrey is accused of traveling at a high rate of speed when he and the Toyota vehicle collided. One of the vehicles were in the process of making a left turn.
The impact of the crash caused both vehicles to go over a curb and into a grassy area off the roadway.
EMS took Aneesah and Darlene to the hospital, but they died upon arrival. De’Ontrey was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Cops responded to the hospital to screen De’Ontrey for impairment and found him to be impaired, police say. Upon De’Ontrey’s release from the hospital, he was arrested charged with 2 counts of felony death by vehicle, reckless driving, and no operator’s license.
The family’s grief is immense because Khalil Akbar died in September 2024 in Charlotte. Khalil likely died from old age and medical complications. Khalil was a Iman in the Muslim religion for many years, many herald him as a great leader.
